Nobody will have missed it but Almaqam shaped promisingly in the C&D Gordon Richards five weeks ago and should be teed up nicely for a big run today. There are slight qualifications to that, as a stronger pace in the race would help, as would more luck in running, but he looks a horse to follow. OMBUDSMAN (nap) is another. The Gosden-trained 4yo did not make his debut until last June but won all four starts and repeatedly left the impression that he was capable of better. He'll need to be, given he carries a 3lb penalty for his French Group 3 success, but this is an exciting prospect. There is tremendous strength in depth to this field but Charlie Appleby's pair Military Order and Ancient Wisdom may prove best of the rest, with William Buick riding the former despite his switch from the AW.[Richard Austen]
